OLIVIER GIROUD MAY FACE EARLY CHELSEA EXIT IF CONTE LANDS £72M-RATED SUMMER TARGET

Following a month of bizarre speculation, the Chelsea supporters were pleased to see Olivier Giroud arrive at the club in January, but recent reports may suggest he could be set to face a premature ending to his career in West London.

Chelsea were linked with a whole host of strikers throughout the mid-season window, none of which did much to inspire the imagination of The Blues faithful propping up our bar in the tavern. In the end, Chelsea signed a striker with a much higher reputation than the vast majority of targets they were linked with, so the supporters were naturally delighted by their club’s deadline day acquisition.

Since joining the club, Giroud has scored 1 goal and provided 3 assists from his 5 appearances in all-competitions, but he has struggled for a regular starting berth due to competition from Alvaro Morata and Eden Hazard who is often deployed as a false-nine by Antonio Conte.

And according to Bleacher Report, Giroud could be set to face further competition next summer, as Chelsea are reportedly lining up a move for one of the most clinical strikers in Europe, namely Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich (valued at £72 million by Transfermarkt).

A transfer which saw Lewandowski swap Munich for West London would certainly be a massive boost for everybody involved with the club, apart from Giroud who would be left surplus to requirements following his arrival.

There are plenty of clubs in the Premier League and across Europe who would make Giroud their first-choice striker in a heartbeat, so the French international would hardly be short of offers if his situation was to change at Stamford Bridge.

Olivier Giroud is far too good to be warming the substitutes bench and playing the occasional match in domestic cup competitions, so if Chelsea do indeed manage to sign Lewandowski next summer, they will have to be prepared to allow their most recent acquisition to depart the club just months after signing from Arsenal.
