Bad News: Chelsea handed massive injury blow ahead of Spurs weekend clash

Wednesday 28 March 2018

Thibaut Courtois could be an injury doubt for Chelsea’s clash against Spurs this weekend after he was forced to withdraw from the Belgium squad.

Courtois missed Chelsea’s last match, a 2-1 extra time win over Leicester City in the FA Cup with a hamstring problem.

But the goalkeeper was selected for the Belgium squad that faces Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

However, the Belgium Football Association have announced Courtois has not made enough progress in his rehabilitation and will play no part in the friendly.

A tweet from Belgium official Twitter account said: “Thibaut Courtois has not recovered from his hamstring injury and left the group.

“Roberto Martínez will decide later on who will replace him in the goal vs Saudi Arabia. Get well soon, Thibaut.”

Following the international break, Chelsea face Spurs at Stamford Bridge in a battle which will go a long way to deciding who finishes in the top four.

Fourth-placed Spurs currently have a five-point lead over Chelsea with eight games to play.

The match will see Olivier Giroud go up against his France national team-mate Hugo Lloris.

And after just one goal since his move in January, the striker is keen to score against Spurs.

He said: “I have been trying very hard to do my best for the team at Chelsea, and I feel I have been a bit unlucky in the past few weeks not to have scored already.

“Hopefully I will score my first one against Tottenham and Hugo, and that will help us win a very, very important game.

“I think we still have our destiny in our own hands in terms of the Premier League and getting into the top four.

“But the Spurs game is massive and though Hugo is my colleague for France I would give him a smile if I scored in that one as we really need to win it.”
