Chelsea news: Mateo Kovacic hits out at Real Madrid over loan - I want to keep it this way

Saturday, 25 August 2018

CHELSEA new boy Mateo Kovacic has blasted Real Madrid and former boss Zinedine Zidane for not giving him a proper chance.

The midfielder desperately pushed for a move away from the Bernabeu this summer.

Kovacic went in search of a club that would guarantee him regular game time off the back of a strong World Cup.

The 24-year-old helped Croatia reach the final in Russia.

But upon his return to Madrid, even with Zinedine Zidane having stepped down at Real, ex-Spain head coach Julen Lopetegui could not offer Kovacic necessary assurances either.

As a result, Real allowed the back-up to Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro to join Chelsea for the 2018/19 campaign.

Maurizio Sarri intends to use him regularly at Stamford Bridge alongside new £57m addition Jorginho and World Cup winner N’Golo Kante.

Kovacic made his debut from the Chelsea bench in Saturday’s 3-2 victory at home to Arsenal.

And it appears he may be keen on making his move away from Real permanent down the line too.

Kovacic told sports channel Sport Klub: “It was important that after three years of inconsistency in playing time in Madrid I’ve got into a team that wants me and a coach who wants and trusts me.

“That’s how Chelsea happened. That’s what I really need now and I want to keep it that way.

"He’s known me for a long time and that’s what matters in my opinion.

“The squad is phenomenal with many great players – that is why is wasn't so hard to adapt quickly.

The tempo is higher and there is more space, but it is not hard to adapt when you are surrounded by great players.”

Kovacic is likely to start at Newcastle and make his full debut for Chelsea on Sunday (4pm).

He is competing for a place in the team with the likes of Ross Barkley, Cec Fabregas, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Danny Drinkwater.

But the latter two could still leave Chelsea either on loan or permanently before the end of August.
