Distance Education at American University

American University is a research institution located at Washington D.C, with highly raked Collages, Renowned faculty.American University was founded by John Fletcher Hurst, a Respected Methodist bishop.American University has been a leader in higher education in the nation and around the world.

It was George Washington’s dream of establishing a university in nation’s capital. It was fulfilled by formation of American University. As the city of Washington D.C grown, the University has also grown and flourished. American University was earlier a private collage which was chartered by congress in 1893 to train the public servants for future. The University created a program to train federal employees to administrate new deal policies. Now the program has evolved in to university of affairs. The University cam was also used for military research and training.




Under graduate degrees, graduate degrees and doctoral degrees are offered at American University.Large percentage of students are recognized for high ranking programs in public policy, finance and public management. The national survey of students engagement in 2008 has praised the university for its student faculty interaction, for its challenging, enriching and collaborative educational experiences.

Distance learning courses in American University was started in 2004 and ever since the courses have been steadily increasing. Professors teach corresponding online version of their courses. many online classes are made available through the Collage of Arts & sciences, School of Business, School of International Services, Communication and Public Affairs. Most of the distance learning courses are available in summer. But, Few courses are also offered in spring. The School of Education, School of teaching, health, literature, psychology, government and journalism offers online education in summer.

Distance education allows students a flexible schedule for completing their course without disturbing their part time or full time work.Online program known as Blackboard allows students to post their comments. They can ask questions to professors, answer the questions asked by professors and discuss assignments. Wimba is a program used for live lectures and discussions. Online classes may be challenging, more time consuming as participants spend lot of time reading and typing comments.Students who study online spend 10 – 15 hours of time per week per class.
