The former Blues’ captain has been working with Chelsea’s under-18s – coached by ex-teammate Jodi Morris – and has been continuously linked with League One clubs Oxford United and Milton Keynes Dons.

The Sun claims that owner Roman Abramovich is said to be desperate on bringing the 39-year-old to the club, with the potential future goal of him managing the London club one day.

Current Blues chief, Antonio Conte, is being associated with the exit door at the end of the year and a reshuffle of the backroom staff will come with the Italian’s departure.

Lampard played for Chelsea between 2001 and 2014, managing to win the 2012 Champions League and three Premier League titles.
