Cesc Fabregas is backing Chelsea FC to put in a strong performance when they host FC Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 clash on Tuesday night.

Fabregas will be hoping to start the game against his former club as Antonio Conte’s men try and take the initiative in the enthralling last 16 tie in west London.

The west London side head into the game fresh from having secured their place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with a dominant 4-0 win over Hull City at Stamford Bridge on Friday night.

And Fabregas is confident that the Blues will be able to put in a strong performance against the La Liga giants this week.

Fabregas is quoted as saying by the Daily Express: “It’s a big game for everyone, for the club. For English football it’s always great to welcome these fantastic teams in European football.

“It’s a massive night for the players, for the club, for English football in general, so hopefully we can do well and give a good image of what we can do, and hopefully put in a good performance.

“When I was at Arsenal we did quite well the two years we played against them, especially in the second year, we nearly got them!

“But they are a top side, obviously. We will have be on top of our game, for 180 minutes, or maybe more, you never know. It’s definitely an important game.”

Chelsea FC are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table as they chase Champions League qualification in Conte’s second campaign at the club.

Fabregas played a key role in helping Chelsea FC to win the title last season under the Italian manager.
