The Manchester United fans have been in buoyant mood in the Transfer Tavern this week since the arrival of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal was officially confirmed.
Following months of intense speculation and various twists and turns, Sanchez finally left North London for Manchester United on Monday in a swap deal with Henrikh Mkhitaryan moving in the opposite direction. Understandably, the punters clad in United red propping up our bar were toasting a drink to their new signing following the announcement, but they are hoping their club have not concluded their business this month just yet.
So far this season, Mourinho has trusted Lukaku to lead the line for the Red Devils in his debut season for the club, and the Belgian has received plenty of criticism for his performances so far. His record reads rather well, as he has already scored 17 and provided 6 assists in his opening 33 appearances for the club. However, he has largely been unchallenged for a starting berth due to Mourinho’s preference to utilise Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford in an inside left position rather than in Lukaku’s number 9 role.
Lukaku’s performances would surely be improved if he felt his place in the starting eleven was in jeopardy. Down the road at Manchester City, Guardiola is managing to keep his forward pairing of Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero happy and scoring goals, despite the fact they are rarely included in the same line-up.
City’s success in this regard proves it is possible to have two top-quality strikers at the club at the same time, so United should take note of this and bring RB Leipzig’s highly talented striker Timo Werner to the club to both challenge and support Lukaku.
Werner – rated at a whopping £54m on Transfermarkt – has been in blistering form in the Bundesliga this season, as the German international has already scored 10 and provided 4 assists from 17 appearances. At just 21-years-of-age, Werner already looks like a complete centre-forward.
Considering his age, Werner could go on to be a United legend if Mourinho decides to bring him to the club in the near future, and in the long-term his value would certainly prove to be greater than that of United’s latest signing Alexis Sanchez.
