Although, Jose Mourinho has a plethora of central defenders in his side, the Portuguese manager revealed that first choice Eric Bailly will be out of action for at least three months and this has prompted the Manchester Club to search for a quality player, with Luis emerging as prime target.

Bailly sustained an ankle injury that was initially thought would keep him out of action for three weeks. However, the Guardian has revealed that the Ivorian star now needs a corrective surgery for the niggling ankle injury and he is expected to be out of action for at least 12 weeks.

Meanwhile, there is a breakdown in relationship between Antonio Conte and David Luiz, with reports indicating that if the Brazilian does not get back into the first team of Chelsea when he returns from his injury lay-off, he will consider a move away from the club.

According to the Mirror, Mourinho is looking to take advantage of the situation of Luis and lure him to Old Trafford to fortify his backline. Mourinho is an avid admirer of the centre-back and the pair have always had a cordial working condition.

The report further claims that, Luis will be signed as a direct replacement for Bailly, which means Mourinho does not trust the likes of Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling.

Jose Mourinho was short of a player in the summer and he has been tipped to be very active in the upcoming January transfer window. Mesut Ozil, Antoine Griezmann and Alex Sandro are the high-profile names linked with a move to the Old Trafford but we wait to see how it pans out.
